How much more of a commitment is competitive dance? Where do we compete?
On top of their regularly scheduled competitive and recreational classes, each dancer is required to attend additional mandatory rehearsals and meetings (see Festival Team Important Dates) and out of town dance competitions. Our out of town competitions generally take place in the months March, April, and May, the furthest we have travelled in previous years is Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Olds, Alberta.
We hold our competitive students to a high standard of excellence in regards to absence and late policies, as well as the agreed upon code of conduct for dancers and parents. Each competitive team family is also required to complete an additional five volunteer hours.
How does the audition process work?
The audition process allows our team of instructors to properly assess each student in the given discipline and place them on the appropriate team. It gives them a chance to see who works best together to create the best possible, well-rounded competitive teams.
After auditions, dancer’s will be notified of which teams they have made. Please note that by auditioning you will not be guaranteed a spot on team, you will be notified if you have been successfully selected notified via email.
What are the benefits of competitive dance?
Dancing in either a recreational or competitive setting can be advantageous in many ways to people of all ages. You do not need to be young or talented to reap the benefits of this illustrious art form. There are four major categories in which dance can be beneficial; physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. The benefits associated with being a member of a team are also part of the competitive dance world, learning to trust your peers and work together.
Competitive dance instils perseverance, responsibility and resilience and teaches the value of constructive criticism. With more performance opportunities there are also more chances to receive feedback from professionals in the industry and make connections. It allows our students to see beyond our “studio bubble” and experience the incredible world of dance.
Dance is the epitome of, one of, the most fundamental connections we have to the universe. Before we can communicate with language, it is through movement that we learn to express our thoughts and ideas, emotions, and an understanding of the world around us. An expression of self that comes so naturally to children. When this movement is consciously structured , it becomes dance.
Solos, duets, and trios look like so much fun. How do I get one?
During the audition process and early registration, we will also be accepting solo, duet, and trio interest forms. Please be sure to include the duet/trio partner(s) you would like and the genre you are requesting.
Note: there are additional costs associated with solos, duets and trios.
